Philadelphia Car Insurance
Philadelphia comes down hard on people who don’t insure their vehicles with the minimal protection. Even considering all of the other reasons to be insured, the possibility of getting punished by Philadelphia law if you are caught without insurance, or what some call the proof of financial responsibility, then you will suffer much more than you would have if you paid the premium every month or six months.
What is the minimum coverage in Philadelphia car insurance?
- $15,000 for injury or death of a single person.
- $30,000 for more than one.
- $5,000 for property damage.
Those limits are pretty low compared to most states, and Philadelphia actually has a good history of premium rates that are on the low side. When you get insured in Philadelphia, you will get an insurance card, which you should keep in your car all the time.
What happens if you get caught without coverage?
- A ticket for three hundred bucks.
- Your license gets suspended for a period of three months, and to get it back at the end of the period, you have to pay fifty dollars.
- Your registration gets suspended for a period of three months, and to get it back at the end of the period, you have to pay fifty dollars.
- It’s a possibility that, while your license is suspended, your car will be forced to be out of service in a sense. No one will be able to drive it, not just you.
You can’t just easily go without car insurance coverage in Philadelphia. Actually, if you don’t renew your policy with your car insurance company, then they have to call up the department of vehicles to relay that information. Then, once the DMV hears, they will send off a letter for you requesting that you give them your new car insurance information. If you are unable to provide that, or if the information that you provide is false, then you could pay the same fines as if you had been driving without it. You also can’t get your vehicle registered if you don’t have a valid car insurance card.
In Philadelphia, the state vehicle inspectors are required to tattle on you. If your inspection sticker goes out, and you take your car in to be inspected, then you have to show them your insurance card. If you don’t have a valid one, not only won’t they inspect you, but once you’re out of hearing distance they’ll contact the DMV and tell them. You’ll get a not so friendly letter from the insurance department in that instance, as well.
Anytime that you change car insurance companies, you have to give PennDOT that information. Your new insurance company does not tell them; it is up to you. If you ever intend to go without car insurance, then you need to send in your license plates or face fines. If you are no longer in possession of your car, then you have to offer proof of that, such as a bill of sale or a repossession statement. You can have insurance with a company from another state, but only if they are either licensed by the Pennsylvania department of insurance to do business in this state, or if they meet their requirements.
